How To Save Money For A Move Overseas

Saving enough money to move abroad is probably one of the biggest and most important parts you need to organise. Giving ourselves only 6 months to save was pretty silly for such a huge move, but we have budgeted every cent of our incomes and changed our lifestyles dramatically in order to make sure we can move to Scotland comfortably.

Moving back home
This is the big one, and our key to saving for our goal. I don’t think it’s ideal for any couple to move back in with their parents after having your own space for so long, but it has literally saved us thousands! If this isn’t an option for you try moving in with friends in a share house or find shared accommodation on Gumtree.

Selling stuff
A repercussion of moving out of our home was selling all of our crap! Most of everything we had to sell was furniture, appliances and kitchenware. The best way we found to get rid of everything and make some money was through a garage sale. We listed the sale on Gumtree a few weeks before we moved out and it was a HUGE success! We made over $1000 and put all the money towards our flights.

Sell your car
You don’t need it when you’ve moved overseas, and it can make a very generous contribution to your savings. Unfortunately my car was still on finance and ended up losing money instead of making some.

Stop impulse purchases!
This pretty much explains itself, stop buying s*** you don’t need, no more lipstick purchases from MAC just because you don’t have that colour. It will be worth it in the long run when you have more money to spend overseas.

Cut back
Stop going out for dinner every other night or going out drinking every weekend. Have friends come to your place instead, it will save you oodles. You could limit yourself to one night out per month?

Budget
This is also a big one. Budget as much as you can, this will give you a good idea on how much you can save for your trip.

Time
Plan your trip plenty in advance, there’s really no point in deciding to move abroad and booking a ticket for 2 months later, unless you already have thousands saved, I don’t see how you could save enough in time.

Most of these things are a no brainer but really do contribute to the amount you can save, they really have helped us. It may seem like you are pretty much cutting out the fun, but as I said before it will definitely be worth it!
